The Ultimate Samoan Cooking Tour

Samoan Cooking Tour

Posted by Lucy Schulz on August 30, 2017

If you are a foodie and coming to beautiful Samoa, then you cannot miss out on a Chef John’s Tour! Chef John doubles up as a tour guide and will show you where the locals go to source fresh ingredients and then cook it up for you with a few scenic stops along the way. A Chef John’s Tour is essential when in Samoa, the tour is the best way to enjoy the local food with a personalized twist as you choose what’s on the menu while site seeing.

Chef John will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the local seafood and produce markets, sharing his knowledge of the local foods and allowing you to choose out what to cook later in the day. If you don’t know what to choose, John will provide some menu options and take your own taste buds into consideration.

The food tour has a focus on supporting local farmers and stores. Throughout the day you will pop into different stores with Chef John to pick up fresh ingredients and try some of the local food such as the Keke Pua’a (pork bun).

Once you have picked up all the ingredients with Chef John, if your tour is on Upolu you will head to the Piula Cave Pool. You have the choice to watch lunch being cooked, take a dip in the cave pool or relax in the sun under the fales while he shares more knowledge about traditional Samoan food. The food is plated up on a traditional ma'ilo plate, which is made from banana leafs to give the traditional cultural experience and keep Samoa clean.

Popular meal choices made by Chef John include his Ulu (breadfruit) hash brown served with fresh coconut or lime dressing and Masimasi fish dish with a ginger sauce. Chef John grills the Masimasi in a local coconut oil and then serves up with a fresh salad using in season vegetables.

Half day and full day tours are available. For more information about Chef John Tours, head to their Facebook page. (note that you won’t see a review under 5 stars!)

Current Time On The Island

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Taumeasina Island Resort in Samoa and I couldn't be more impressed with the experience. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm and friendly service by the staff. The property is absolutely stunning and well-maintained... The accommodation at the resort was also top-notch. I stayed in one of the beachfront bungalows, and the room was spacious, clean, and had all the amenities I needed. The view from my balcony was breathtaking.
